Farming vs. Mining
In the mining model of software companies, the charismatic, flighty founders and their investors stand to make a lot of money. Their workers, their customers, and their secondary investors all get boned, because these companies and their products tend to suck.
So true…
The people who really change the world are farmers.
Unfortunately mining seems to be very popular these days….
IE6 Countdown
Finally even Microsoft started working on phasing out Internet Explorer 6. They are pretty serious to drop the worldwide usage below 1%:
10 years ago a browser was born.
Its name was Internet Explorer 6.
Now that we’re in 2011, in an era of modern web standards, it’s time to say goodbye.
I love that initiative and hope the number drops pretty fast from 12% right now to 1%… would save us Web developers so much hassles… So go and upgrade or and check out http://www.ie6countdown.com/.
Quote of the week
Dance like nobody’s watching;
love like you’ve never been hurt.
Sing like nobody’s listening;
live like it’s heaven on earth.
World Lens
Absolutely amazing real-time translation app: World Lens. Just point your phone to some text and it translates for you… in place, right inside the image. Unfortunately only English<->Spanish are available right now, but imagine this with Chinese while being in China. Absolutely fantastic!

Wipe the phone clean!
But maybe wiping the phone clean and starting over is the best overall option sometimes.
Hey, it’s a phone! Why should I need to worry about memory management, background tasks and hung processes? Oh, it’s an Android phone, yes, you have to take care of that on your own. Because it is “open”. Uhm.
I personally love my closed iPhone, which just works.

The Conference Call
Although the image quality is not that good this is a highly recommended video for all workers in virtual remote environments with regular conference calls:
Don’t we all know these kind of conference calls?
DevOps?
After writing about Taco Bell Programming I discovered that there is a new movement called “DevOps” which goes into the same direction:
Let’s face it – where we are right now sucks. In the IT industry, or perhaps to be more specific, in the software industry, particularly in the web-enabled sphere, there’s a tacit assumption that projects will run late, and when they’re delivered (if they’re ever delivered), they will underperform, and not deliver well against investment. It’s a wonder any of us have a job at all!
The Devops movement is bold enough to believe that there’s a better way – a way of building teams, and building software that can solve these problems.
Taco Bell Programming
32 concurrent parallel parsing processes and zero bullshit to manage. Requirement satisfied.
Lots of work can be achieved by using existing tools… so use them, even if they are not fancy, new or hip. That’s true Unix Zen!
